The Champion 200978 has a 120V output and great power and versatility thanks to its dual-fuel technology. If it is powered by gasoline, the device has a running power of 3,650W and a starting power of 4,500W. If it runs on propane, it has a rated power of 3285 watts and a starting power of 4500 watts. Also, since it can work in parallel (ParaLink is not included), this power can be increased by connecting it to another unit that works with it. The pull-start mechanism on the inverter generator is simple and old-fashioned. It is said to make 64 dBA of noise (just slightly more noisy than a normal conversation). The EZ Start Dial on Champion makes it easy to start the engine and get to all the controls you need. With 2.9 gallons of gas, the 200978 can run for up to 17 hours (fuel consumption is approximately 0.17 GPH). It can run for up to 21 hours on propane (on a 20 lbs tank – propane consumption around 0.22 GPH). The 200978 makes a clean sine wave. With a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 3%, you can safely plug sensitive electronics into its AC outlets.
The control panel has 3 AC outlets: a duplex 120V 20A (5-20R) outlet, a 120V 30A (TT-30R) outlet, and a 120V 20A (TT-20R) outlet. Also, it has 1 DC outlet: a 12V 8A receptacle that looks like a cigarette lighter. This makes it easy to charge your batteries.Since the unit comes with a dual port USB adapter, you can also use the DC receptacle to easily charge devices like cell phones and tablets. The TT-30R plug on this Champion generator is ready for an RV.TT stands for “Travel Trailer”.
The 200978’s control panel has a digital Intelligauge data center that tells you how many hours it has been running, how much power it is putting out, the voltage, and the frequency. This helps you keep track of its activity and status. In addition to this information, the device’s light indicator will show if there isn’t enough oil.The inverter generator has a built-in fuel gauge that makes it easy and quick to check the fuel level. As for safety features, the device has a circuit breaker for overheating and an automatic shut-off for low oil, so you can use it without worry. The unit also has CO ShieldTM technology, which keeps an eye on the amount of poisonous carbon monoxide (CO) gas that builds up in the generator when the engine is running.CO ShieldTM automatically turns off the engine and lights up a red LED if it finds high levels of CO gas. It’s a nice extra safety measure, but don’t forget to take your generator outside at all times. The Champion 200978 comes with more than just the usual paperwork and an owner’s manual to get you up and running quickly. There are two USB ports, a funnel, a tool kit, an oil hose, and a propane hose.
The Champion 200978 is 21.3 inches long, 18.1 inches wide, and 18.1 inches high.Together with its traditional, open-frame design, they support the generator and allow it to be raised above the ground. The device was made to work well in harsh conditions and in the great outdoors.Since the 200978 weighs only 76 pounds, you can take it anywhere you need power. Also, the generator’s open frame makes it easier to hold and move from one place to another. If you need more help getting the 200978 from one place to another, you can buy the official wheel kit separately.
The following charts show how some of the most important features of the Champion-200978 compare to other generators with the same power output.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
A US-based producer of power equipment, Champion Power Equipment was established in 2003.The comparatively tiny business has established a name for itself in the portable generator market as well as the larger power equipment market, with a concentration on heavy duty machinery like log cutters, snow blowers, chipper shredders, etc.Their whole product line is American-engineered.The corporation does not, however, disclose the country of origin of its parts.
There is a warranty on the Champion 200978 for up to 3 years. This warranty may not cover all parts of the generator or may only cover certain parts.Champion’s warranty policies can tell you more about how long the warranty on a Champion generator lasts. You can also call their customer service line at 1-877-338-0999.
