The gasoline-powered 212 cc OHV 4-stroke engine is the heart of the Powerhorse 2500. It has a 120V output and a running power of 2,000W and a peak power of 2,500W. This generator has a noise level of 67 dBA, which is less loud than background music. It starts up with a traditional pull-start mechanism. With a full tank, the 2500 can run for about 11 hours at 0.5 load with a fuel capacity of 4 gallons (fuel consumption is approximately 0.36 GPH). The 2500 makes a clean sine wave. With a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 5%, you can safely plug your sensitive electronics into the AC outlets.
On the control panel, there are 4 AC outlets for: Two 120V 20A duplexes (5-20R).Also, it has 1 DC outlet: a 12V 8A plug that looks like a cigarette lighter so you can easily charge your batteries.
The 2500’s control panel has a voltmeter that makes it easy to check the power output at any time. This is helpful for keeping track of its status and activity. In addition to this information, a light lets you know right away if the oil level is too low.The generator has a built-in fuel gauge that makes it quick, easy, and convenient to check how much gas is in it.From a safety point of view, the product has an automatic shut-off for low oil and an overload protection (circuit breaker), so you can use it without worrying.Aside from the features we’ve already talked about, the Powerhorse 2500 also comes with the basic paperwork and an owner’s manual, so you can start using it right away.
The Powerhorse 2500 has a standard, open frame that measures L25.4 x W18.8 x H19.8 in, This gives it support and lets it be lifted off the ground. The device was made to work well in harsh conditions and in the great outdoors. The generator weighs 100 pounds, so it may be hard to move or transport it by hand, even though it is technically considered “portable” (movable). But its wheel kit and folding handle make it easy to move once it’s on the ground, which makes up for its lack of maneuverability.
The following charts show how some of the most important features of the Powerhorse-2500 compare to other generators with the same power output.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
The Northern Tool & Equipment Company Inc.owns and distributes gas-powered outdoor equipment under the Powerhorse brand name through its physical stores and website.Among the gas- and electric-powered instruments offered by Powerhorse are pressure washers, wood chippers and shredders, log splitters, electric generators, and inverters.Water pumps and engines are also available in the product line. The tagline of the company is “Power You Can Depend On”.Although they are produced in China, Powerhorse generators are designed, developed, and tested in Minnesota.
There is a warranty on the Powerhorse 2500 for up to 2 years. This warranty may not cover all parts of the generator or may only cover certain parts.Powerhorse Customer Support can be reached at 1-866-443-2576 for more information about the warranty on Powerhorse generators.
