The Powerhorse 4500 is made with a 212 cc OHV 4-stroke engine that runs on gasoline. It has a 120V output and a running power of 3,600W and a peak power of 4,500W. The noise level of the generator is 70 dBA, which is about the same as a shower. It is started with a simple pull-start mechanism. With a fuel capacity of 3.9 gallons, the 4500 can run at 0.5 load for about 10.6 hours on a full tank (fuel consumption is approximately 0.37 GPH). The 4500 makes a clean sine wave with a Total Harmonic Distortion of 5%, so it is safe to plug sensitive electronics into the AC outlets (THD).
The control panel has 4 AC outlets: a 120V 20A (5-20R) duplex outlet, a 120V 30A (L5-30R) outlet, and a 120V 30A (TT-30R) outlet. It also has 2 DC outlets: there are two 5V USB ports that make it easy to charge devices like cell phones and tablets. This Powerhorse generator is ready for an RV because it has a TT-30R (TT stands for “Travel Trailer”) plug.
The status and activity of the 4500 can be easily checked on the control panel, which has a meter that shows voltage, frequency, and lifetime hours. In addition to this, the featured light indicator will let you know when the oil level is too low.The generator has a built-in fuel gauge that makes it quick, easy, and convenient to check how much gas is in the machine. In terms of safety, the generator can be used without worry because it has a circuit breaker for overheating and an automatic shut-off when the oil level gets too low.The Powerhorse 4500 comes with basic instructions and an owner’s manual to help you start the generator quickly. It also comes with a funnel and a tool kit, among other things.
The Powerhorse 4500 has a traditional, open frame that measures L24.8 x W23 x H21.3 in, This frame gives it support and lets it be lifted off the ground. This type of design is great for tough environments and heavy outdoor use.Even though the generator is technically considered to “be portable,” it will be very hard to move it by hand because it weighs 125 pounds (in the sense that it is movable).Still, once it’s on the ground, its wheels and folding handle make it easy to move.
The following charts show how some of the most important features of the Powerhorse-4500 compare to other generators with the same power output.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
The Northern Tool & Equipment Company Inc.owns and distributes gas-powered outdoor equipment under the Powerhorse brand name through its physical stores and website.Among the gas- and electric-powered instruments offered by Powerhorse are pressure washers, wood chippers and shredders, log splitters, electric generators, and inverters.Water pumps and engines are also available in the product line. The tagline of the company is “Power You Can Depend On”.Although they are produced in China, Powerhorse generators are designed, developed, and tested in Minnesota.
There is a warranty on the Powerhorse 4500 for up to 2 years. This warranty may not cover all parts of the generator or may only cover certain parts.Powerhorse Customer Support can be reached at 1-866-443-2576 for more information about the warranty on Powerhorse generators.
