Description
The 389 cc Honda GX390 OHV 4-stroke engine on the Honda EG6500CL runs on gasoline and can put out 120/240V. It has a running power of 5,500W and a maximum power of 6,500W. The noise level of the generator is set at 70 dBA (just as noisy as a dishwasher). It uses a simple, traditional pull-start mechanism to get going. With a full tank, the EG6500CL can run for about 10 hours at 0.5 load, which is about 0.63 GPH (gallon per hour), because it can hold 6.3 gallons of fuel.
Outlets
There are 6 AC outlets on the control panel: two 120V 20A (5-20R) GFCI duplexes, a 120V 30A (L5-30R) receptacle, and a 120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle.
Even though this Honda generator isn’t quite RV Ready, its L5-30R receptacle makes it easy to connect to an RV with an L5-30P to TT-30R adaptor. The EG6500CL is also transfer switch ready because it has a twist-lock L14-30R receptacle. You can easily connect it to your breaker box to power your home when the power goes out.Features
The generator has a built-in fuel gauge that makes it quick, easy, and convenient to check how much gas is in it.
The product is safe because it has an overload protection (circuit breaker) and an automatic low oil shut-off (Oil Alert®), so you can use it without worrying. In addition to the features we’ve already talked about, the Honda EG6500CL comes with the usual paperwork and an owner’s manual , so you can use it right away. You can buy a storage cover from the company separately.Mobility
The Honda EG6500CL is 26.8 inches long, 20.9 inches wide, and 22.5 inches tall.
It has a typical open frame design that makes it stable and allows it to be raised above ground level. The design works well in rough places and for hard outdoor use.The generator is technically “portable” because it can be moved, but at 179 pounds, it may be hard to move it by hand. So, you might also want to think about buying the official wheel kit for it.Product Videos
The following charts show how some of the most important features of the Honda-EG6500 compare to other generators with the same power output.
**Fuel efficiency is give in relative percentage, 0 being the lowest and 1 being the highest value. Please see below specification table for actual value.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
