The Powerhorse 7000 has a 420 cc (12.5 hp) OHV 4-stroke engine that provides 120/240V, runs on gasoline, and puts out 5,500W continuously and 7,000W at its peak. The generator has a noise level of 74 dBA, which is just a little louder than a dishwasher. It has a simple pull-start mechanism. With a full tank, the 7000 can run for about 10.4 hours at 0.5 load on its 6.6-gallon fuel tank (fuel consumption is approximately 0.63 GPH). The 7000 makes a clean sine wave. With a Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of less than 5%, you can safely plug your sensitive electronics into the AC outlets.
The control panel features the upcoming 9 AC outlets: Four Duplexes 120V 20A (5-20R); 120/240V 30A (L14-30R) receptacle.Additionally, it features 1 DC outlet: there’s a 12V 8A (cigarette lighter style) receptacle allowing you to easily charge your batteries.Due to the featured twist-lock L14-30R receptacle, the 7000 is transfer switch ready: you may connect it to a breaker box to power your household during a power outage.
The 7000 and its control panel have an easy-to-use voltmeter that lets you check the power output at any time. This makes it easier to keep track of its status and activity. In addition to this information, a light will show you when the oil level is too low.The generator has a built-in fuel gauge that makes it easy to see at a glance how much gas is in the tank. When it comes to safety, this product has an automatic low oil shut-off and an overload protection (circuit breaker), so you can use it without worry. In addition to the features we’ve already talked about, the Powerhorse 7000 comes with the usual paperwork and an owner’s manual , so you can use it right away.
The Powerhorse 7000 is 33 inches long, 24 inches wide, and 25 inches high.It has a typical open frame design that makes it stable and allows it to be raised above ground level. The design works well in rough places and for hard outdoor use.The generator weighs 175 pounds, so it may be hard to move or transport it by hand, even though it is technically considered “portable” (movable). But its wheel kit and folding handle make it easy to move once it’s on the ground, which makes up for its lack of maneuverability.
The following charts show how some of the most important features of the Powerhorse-7000 compare to other generators with the same power output.

- We compared more than 500 portable generators at 50% load. We found that there is “skewed right” distribution for the difference between 50% load and 25% load and the median comes at 1.43. With this number we converter all the 25% load runtime to 50% load. Same with the propane efficiency, where median is 1.38.
- For some generators where propane runtime was not given, we used NIST 1994 GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) formula: 5.66 lbs. of propane = 1 gal of gasoline. All propane runtime is for 20 lbs. propane tank (4.7 gallons).
- Unlike many other sites, we actually tried to find out information about each of the above requirements. However, we are human and are therefore capable of the odd oversight or mistake. Please let us know if you spot any missing or erroneous values so that we can fix them.
About the Manufacturer
The Northern Tool & Equipment Company Inc.owns and distributes gas-powered outdoor equipment under the Powerhorse brand name through its physical stores and website.Among the gas- and electric-powered instruments offered by Powerhorse are pressure washers, wood chippers and shredders, log splitters, electric generators, and inverters.Water pumps and engines are also available in the product line. The tagline of the company is “Power You Can Depend On”.Although they are produced in China, Powerhorse generators are designed, developed, and tested in Minnesota.
There is a warranty on the Powerhorse 7000 for up to 2 years. This warranty may not cover all parts of the generator or may only cover certain parts.Powerhorse Customer Support can be reached at 1-866-443-2576 for more information about the warranty on Powerhorse generators.
